Extreema® soft slings in action
MERKUR – Germany
The Merkur Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) is one of the largest offshore wind projects along the German North Sea coast, located approximately 45 kilometers north of Borkum. With a total capacity of 400 megawatts, this large-scale development plays a vital role in supporting Germany’s renewable energy goals.
To lift and install the enormous monopile foundations, the project team chose Extreema® soft slings due to their unmatched performance and reliability in offshore applications. Each monopile measured 70 meters in length, had a diameter of 8.1 meters, and weighed an impressive 1,100 metric tons.
These Extreema® soft slings have been successfully used in multiple offshore wind projects, reinforcing their reputation as a smart investment with long-term value. Their low elongation under load, excellent length tolerances, and compatibility with multi-leg lifting assemblies using spreaders or lifting beams make them ideal for critical heavy-lift operations.
Following the de-mobilization of the jack-up installation vessel, the Extreema® soft slings were carefully inspected and professionally repaired for future use. Over the course of the Merkur project, a total of 3,500 lifts were carried out using these same slings. After testing, they showed virtually no loss of strength, a testament to their durability and reusability.
The Merkur OWF project clearly demonstrates the performance, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of Extreema® soft slings in high-demand offshore environments.
SteelWind - Germany
In a high-profile heavy lift project in 2020, Extreema® soft slings played a crucial role in the safe and efficient transport of giant monopiles for a major offshore wind farm development. Over the course of just one year, a total of 40 monopiles and 120 sections were successfully moved highlighting the reliability and strength of Extreema® solutions in large-scale marine logistics.
The slings featured an endless loop construction encased in a compact, high-strength Cordura® jacket, designed for minimal elongation under load, precise length tolerances, and exceptional lifting capacities. This combination ensured optimal performance, safety, and handling in a challenging offshore environment.
This project showcases how Extreema® soft slings deliver a precision-engineered performance for the world’s most demanding renewable energy and offshore heavy lifting applications.
Enercon - Noordoostpolder
The Noordoostpolder Windfarm is strategically located both onshore and nearshore along the dikes of the IJsselmeer, on the western side of the Noordoostpolder in the Netherlands. At the time of construction, it featured 86 high-performance Enercon GmbH wind turbines, each equipped with nearly 60-meter-long blades. These turbines, mounted on concrete pedestals reaching 135 meters in height, were among the largest of their kind.
For the installation process, Extreema® soft slings played a key role in lifting the fully assembled turbine and blades to a height of up to 150 meters in one single lift. This advanced lifting solution significantly improved efficiency and delivered substantial cost savings for Enercon GmbH during the windfarm construction.
Veja Mate – Germany
Extreema® soft slings were chosen for the loadout and installation of 67 monopile foundations at the Veja Mate Offshore Wind Farm, located near the Eemshaven harbor. Each monopile measured 85 meters in length, had a diameter of 8,7 meters, and weighed an impressive 1300 tons.
This first of its kind landmark offshore wind project was completed on time and within budget, setting a new standard for safe and efficient offshore lifting operations. The entire crew, including riggers, lifting engineers, and supervisors, received specialized training on the proper handling and operational codes of conduct for Extreema® soft slings, ensuring maximum safety and reliability throughout the project.
Block Island – USA
The Block Island Wind Farm, the first offshore wind farm in the United States, was successfully completed for GE Wind USA. This landmark renewable energy project delivers 30 megawatts (MW) of clean energy through five state-of-the-art wind turbines.
For the transport and offshore installation of the Alstom/GE Wind nacelles from Saint-Nazaire, France, to U.S. coastal waters, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier utilized Extreema® soft slings. These high-performance lifting solutions ensured safe and efficient handling of the massive components.
To achieve perfect balance and positioning under challenging offshore conditions, a custom-engineered rotating lifting tool was designed and supplied in combination with the Extreema® soft slings. This tailored solution ensured seamless installation even in rough sea environments.
Race Bank – United Kingdom
GeoSea’s jack-up vessel INNOVATION successfully installed 91 monopile foundations at the Ørsted Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm, a 580-megawatt (MW) project located off the coast of North Norfolk, UK.
The monopile loadout, each weighing up to 840 tons (t), was executed in Bremerhaven, Germany, using a parallel lift with two 800-ton cranes to ensure safe and efficient handling of the massive structures.
To achieve the high precision and safety standards required for this offshore operation, Extreema® soft slings were selected. Their precise length tolerances ensured accurate and secure lifting, which was critical for this large-scale offshore wind foundation installation.
